The workers were paid a wage and then the products of their labor were sold at a higher price so that the worker could not afford to buy his own work. In the Marxist ideal, if the workers owned the factories, they would not be loosing the profits to a bourgeoisie owner. Sometimes, Marx says that the act of working, as on an embly line, is in itself alienating. This is particularly in Das Kapital. Other times, he says that the alienating factor is that the goods produced by one's own hand are taken away and made unaffordable.
