How can i get my boyfriend to show his emotions with me more?

he's not that showy with his emotions but he wasn't always like that... he had a few heartaches a while back and that's probably why..i feel he has boundaries around himself although he tells me that with me, he doesn't...but i still can't help feeling that he's holding back...help pls...
