Is this a rat or mouse dropping? Does it seem like more than one rat or mouse?

They multiply like mad, it's probably a mouse. D-CON works on mice or rats but they die in your house & it smells frekn awful. I bought this stuff called homeless mouse (kind of citrus oil stuff) at homelessmouse dot com and it seemed to help a LOT. Also they hate pure peppermint oil, you can dip a cotton ball in pure peppermint oil n put it wherever they are hanging out and they hate it and they'll leave. I live near the train and yeah they come in when it gets cold outside, it sux... go around the outside of your house, block ALL the holes they can use. If you can fit a pencil in a hole then a mouse can squeeze into the same hole. Fill holes with cement or steel wool. I do this every fall. Also you have to move your stuff around, get rid of the clutter, go through your linens, shelves & closets of stuff that never gets disturbed, go through & declutter all of that, make them know for sure they are NOT welcome! Let's see, what else. The noisemaker thingies you plug into the outlets don't seem to do that much but I have them in anyway, figure they can't hurt. Keep all your food in tupperware type containers, so they have NO access to food whatsoever. Put away the dog food overnight n don't let it sit. Good luck. It's a war but you can win it.
